Making kites

We have been busy making kites so that we can fly them on our Matariki celebration day.  We used skewers, plastic bags, tape and string to make our kites.  We can't wait to fly them on the next windy day!

This is how we made our kites -

First we trimmed the pointed end of two skewers.  We marked the middle of each skewer with a marker, then took one of them and marked the point half way between the middle and end.

Secondly we cut open up our plastic bag so it was laid out flat then we put our skewers on top of it in the shape of a 't'.

Next we marked each point of the 't' shape with a marker.  We connected these points together to make a diamond shape.  When we had finished that we cut our diamond shape out very carefully.

We positioned the skewers on top of the diamond shape so that each point was placed in a corner.  We taped the skewers in place.

Next we cut long strips from the remaining plastic and joined the pieces together with tape.  When our long tail was done we tied it to one of the skewers.

Finally we wound 15 metres of string around a cardboard spool and attached the end of the string to where the skewers crossed.  Now our kites are ready for flying!
