Another Silver!

RD has been working so hard on Mathletics at home.  She is the latest student to receiver her Silver Award.  So far seven students have earned Silver Awards from our class.

Donation from Bunnings

Recently our school received a generous donation from the local Bunnings Warehouse who are very proud to support our school.  They sent us a big cheque to display in our office.  Of course they sent the real money to our school bank account!  We made cards to show our gratitude for their kind gift which is going to be used to set up our school website.

Thank you so much Bunnings Warehouse!

Thank you - from the Variety Bash

Our school received a lovely, colourful certificate today from the Variety Bash to thank our school for their support during their road trip earlier in the year.  Panmure District School was one of the 4000 schools that was visited!  Aren't we lucky!  Mrs Surgener, our principal has allowed our class to display the certificate in our classroom window.

Descriptive Writing about school

School

A school is a place where we learn things such as Art, and play with our teacher.  At school the sounds that you hear are talking and shouting.  We can find many schools around the place but they are usually near houses where the children live.  A school is special because we get to do Art, play, learn, read and write.  The principal, teachers and students take care of the school.  I think a school is a fun place.

Descriptive Writing about families

Family

A family is a group of people that love each other.  It can be a big group of people.

SS

Family

A family is a group of people who are loving.  You can find families going on vacation or in their houses.  Families look like people who are happy.  Families sound like people who are together having fun.  Families live in houses or in other places like apartments, garages or caravans.  Families are special because God created them.  Families can go for a camp such as at the beach, wilderness or farm.  That's what families can do.  Some aunties and uncles or grandparents can visit their families so that they can see if they're alright.  Some teenagers can babysit their younger brothers and sisters so that the parents can go out.  I think that families are important because if you get hurt you need your family to support and help you.

My Family

A family is a group of people that take care of each other.  There are different kinds of families.  A family is group of people that help each ohter and participate together.  A family looks good when they are happy.  A family is special because they support each other.  A family has parents and children.

A family is a group of people that are related to you.  The people that are related to you can be your auntie or uncle, grandma or grandpa and cousins.  your family can look black or white.  your family is special how ever they look.  My family is special in a helping way.  My family helps each other even though it is hard.  I think having a family that is loving and helpful is special.

Here are some of the pages of our royal wedding book which we made as a gift for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to celebrate their wedding day.  Miss B posted our book to the royal couple and we hope they enjoy it.  We also hope that they visit New Zealand very soon and give them a warm invitation to come to our school when they do.

Taking photos from different perspectives

Miss B is teaching us how to use a digital camera.  We've been learning how to frame shots so that the subject takes up most of the space in the view-finder.  We know that we have to hold the camera very still when taking the photo and that the camera has to be level.  Miss B showed us how to take photos of one subject from different perspectives.  Look how interesting a xylophone can be when photographed from different angles!

Here are KL's photos of her boots:

Try learning to touch type!

Miss B has found a fun website that can teach us how to touch type.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

Dictionaries for Year 4 Students

The Year 4 students were so excited to receive their dictionaries from the Ellerslie Rotary Club this week.  Each year the Rotary Club donates dictionaries to the Year 4 students at our school.  This year three members of the club came for the presentation.  To show our appreciation for the gifts we sang two special songs and two students gave speeches.  We would like to give a big thank you to our lovely friends at the Ellerslie Rotary Club for their support and for thinking of us.  We appreciate your kindness and will treasure the gifts you've given us.

We know RD enjoyed getting his dictionary because he had his nose in it from the hall (where it was presented to him) all the way to the classroom!  When he was asked if he liked his new dictionary he said "I love my dictionary because it has pictures of all the things I like in it!"

We know that if we use our dictionaries they will help us to find the meanings of words that are new to us and they can also help us to learn how to spell words.  Dictionaries are great books to have!

Pania Music

Here are some pictures of us practicing our composition 'Pania of the Reef' in our classroom.

This afternoon we performed our Pania of the Reef composition and sang a song about her during our school assembly.  Some of us were very nervous to perform in front of so many children and the teachers but we did our best.  We are proud of our achievement.  We know our audience enjoyed our music because they clapped loudly when we were done.

Miss B asked us to think about what the Pania of the Reef story teaches us.  Here are our ideas:

The story of Pania teaches us...

- that some people fall in love instantly.

- that people watch us when we are unaware.

- that we cannot always trust the advice we are given.

- that we should always test people before we trust them.

- that some stories include fantasy.

- that some people are so desperate to keep their loved ones close they force them to stay with them.

- that we sometimes need help to solve problems.

- that family ties are strong.

Merit Award Winners

Each Friday two students are awarded certificates for outstanding achievements during the past week.  Miss B forgot to upload the photo of the Merit Award winners for Week 1 so here it is:

KL was given an award for being able to predict a number in growing pattern by doubling while LU has been writing her ideas with more confidence and independence.  Well done girls!

While two girls won Merit Awards in Week 1, two boys worked hard in Week 2.

AM earned his award for including lots of intricate details in his drawings while SS has been able to understand how to use the greater than and less than symbols to compare numbers. Congratulations boys!

Coral Art

While discussing the story of Pania of the Reef we realised that we needed to learn more about coral.  We found out that coral may look like plants but they are in fact tiny marine organisms (just a few milimetres in length) that feed on tiny fish and plankton.  Most coral need a lot of sunlight to survive and so they are found in shallow water.  They also like warmth so are found in tropical areas.  There are many kinds of coral.  Some look like flowers, others resemble fans while we saw a picture of some coral that looked like our brain!  That was crazy!

Our teacher told us that we could paint some coral pictures.  She showed us some new painting techniques and asked us to try them out in our paintings.  We learned how to shade using cross-hatching and used pointalism when painting the water.  We hope you like our first experiment with our new painting techniques.
